Who was Amarnath Ghosh?

Amarnath Ghosh, as revealed through a Gofundme page established in his memory, was not only a student at a prestigious university but also a faculty member at the Kuchipudi Art Academy. His life was a testament to his passion for exploring cultural diversities through the lens of arts and academia. Hailing from Bengal, Ghosh dedicated himself to researching the compositions of Sri Rabindranath Tagore, focusing on themes of race, ethnicity, and the unification of diverse cultures.

His profound interest lay in understanding how dance could serve as a bridging medium among different communities. Indeed, Ghosh believed in the power of dance to unite people from various backgrounds. His close friend and well-wisher, Devoleena Bhattacharjee, shared on Twitter, “Ghosh was a dedicated student of the renowned Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam garu.” She also highlighted his exceptional qualities as both an individual and an artist.

Ghosh, who came from Siuri in West Bengal, was deeply interested in how different cultures come together. He studied this by looking at the works of the famous Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. His love for dance and his hard work in his studies made him well-respected in both the educational and artistic communities.

He completed his education at the Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts. With a strong commitment to spreading the beauty of Indian classical arts, he started his own organization called MAHAAMRITENDRA. This group aims to share and celebrate the rich traditions of Indian classical performances.

  • Amarnath Ghosh lived in Kolkata and was known for his remarkable skills in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, two classical Indian dance forms. He was studying for a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree specializing in Dance at Washington University in St. Louis.
  • Ghosh had mastered four different dance styles and had studied at the prestigious Kalakshetra Academy in Chennai, making him a notable figure in the dance community. His talents were recognized with a National Scholarship in Kuchipudi awarded by the International Cultural Ministry. He received training from reputed instructors including Bobita Dey Sarkar, Sri MV Narasimhachari, and the honored Padma Sri Adyar K Lakshman.
  • According to a social media post by Devoleena Bhattacharjee, Ghosh was the sole child of his parents. Tragically, he lost his mother three years ago and had previously lost his father during his childhood.

What Happened After His Death?

Shyamal Ghosh, from Suri, shared that his nephew had passed away. He learned about it through his sister who called from New Delhi. The details surrounding his nephew’s death were unclear to him, prompting him to seek more information from the police station in Suri. His nephew owned a house there.

Srimayi Vempati, a teacher of Kuchipudi dance and Ghosh’s mentor, got news from his classmates on Wednesday that Ghosh had gone missing.

After waiting for 24 hours, his classmates approached the police and eventually learned about his passing.

Sanatanu Dutta, a cinematographer based in Kolkata and claiming to be Ghosh’s neighbor in Suri, mentioned that he had a conversation with Ghosh through WhatsApp on Tuesday. Ghosh did not suggest he was in any danger. Dutta received distressing news on Thursday morning from Praveen Paul, Ghosh’s partner, who found Ghosh’s mobile phone and wallet near his body. The fingerprints confirmed it was Ghosh, according to Dutta.

Local councillor in Suri, Suprana Ray, has asked the authorities to dig deeper into the matter to uncover more details.

The Circle of Grief and Remembrance

The abrupt departure of Amarnath Ghosh has left his friends, family, and the larger community engulfed in profound grief. Bhattacharjee poignantly mentioned, “The loss of Amarnath has left us all devastated, and his absence is deeply felt within our Kuchipudi group.” It’s a sentiment echoed by many who were touched by Ghosh’s kindness, his dedication to his art, and his academic pursuits.

Ghosh’s story is a harsh reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the vital need for communities to band together in times of tragedy. As a tribute to his memory, his friends have been reaching out for support, even asking for assistance from the Indian Embassy. Notably, Ghosh was the sole beacon of his lineage, having lost both parents at a young age – his mother three years ago and his father during his childhood.

In Pursuit of Justice and Peace

The investigation into Amarnath Ghosh’s tragic end is currently underway by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Public Information Officer Evita Caldwell stated, “At this time, I can confirm that we are investigating the death of a South Asian decent male.” However, the police are still in the process of confirming Ghosh’s identity formally as they endeavor to contact next-of-kin and accurately ascertain details.

A Beacon of Unity in Diversity

His life, though tragically brief, was a vivid tapestry of dedication— to his art, his academic pursuits, and the noble idea that dance and cultural expressions can unite us, irrespective of our different heritages.

As we remember Ghosh, let’s carry forward his belief in the unifying power of art and culture. His story, though ended, continues to inspire and remind us that in diversity there is beauty and strength. May his soul find peace, and may those he left behind find comfort in the memories of his extraordinary life and contributions.
